Intel regained its familiar position as the
leading seller of semiconductors in the world in the first quarter, as
the ongoing downturn in the memory market dragged Samsung Electronics
down to No. 2, according to market research firm IC Insights.
The urgency of IIoT security is becoming ever more apparent, and embedding the highest levels of trust is now essential. The editors at AspenCore have compiled a series that will help you understand how to design in IIoT security, the benefits of hardware-based security, use cases involving the latest security solutions, and more.
The IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS)
will run June 2–7 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in
Boston’s bustling Seaport District, just a short walk from downtown.
The annual conference features workshops, technical sessions, panel
sessions, social events, and an exhibition. EE Times Senior Technical
Editor Martin Rowe met with conference chairs Mark Gouker and Lawrence
Kushner on May 17 at MIT Lincoln Labs to discuss the event.

A year ago, during the first round of tariff
discussions, the electronics industry remained largely hopeful that the
United States and China would find a way to prevent their simmering
trade tensions from becoming a full-blown war.
By late fall, however, high-tech industry leaders were anxious, fearing
that the conflict had already escalated irreversibly.
Unmanned vehicles hold great promise for the future while also giving rise to new data security and data integrity challenges. When removing the human factor, we are even more reliant on technology to keep our data intact and protected.

There is a lot of buzz about 5G these days, and
for good reason. While 3G and 4G have had a long life and the 3G to 4G
(LTE) transition was reasonably gradual, the 5G transition will go much
faster, even though the technology behind 5G is complex. Some of the
changes in the 5G standard include new techniques to encode the control
and data packets sent over the 5G radios. There was deep disagreement
on which coding techniques to use...
In this article, we discuss the characteristics of active-clamp forward and continuous-conduction flyback isolated power supply topologies and demonstrate the design and performance trade-offs of each using two telecom-oriented power supplies as examples.

There are many challenges in circuit design today
and understanding the key differences between digital isolators and
opto-coupled isolators in circuit design helps developers design more
effectively. This whitepaper reviews the challenges of modern circuit
design...
At its 2019 Capital Markets Day in London this
week, STMicroelectronics emphasized 5G will be a key driver for growth
in all its end markets as it aims to reach $12 billion in revenue by
the second half of 2021. Jean-Marc Chery, president & CEO, said
that ST has ten "macro" programs that will contribute to its growth,
boosted by 5G deployment. He added, “We are strongly convinced we will
deliver $12 billion revenue second half of 2021.”

In addition to signal frequency and bandwidth, the
signal linearity and chirp duration determine radar performance. It is
therefore important to analyze automotive radar signal parameters such
as chirp length, chirp rate and frequency deviation.
All major chip vendors – namely,
Qualcomm, Cypress or Texas Instruments – pursuing the elusive IoT
market today are discovering that the smart-home segment is a
roadrunner and they are Wile E. Coyote. The challenges of a fragmented
smart home IoT frontier are manifold.

Achronix is back in the game of providing
full-fledged FPGAs with a new high-end 7-nm family, joining the Gold
Rush of silicon to accelerate deep learning. It aims to leverage novel
design of its AI block, a new on-chip network, and use of GDDR6 memory
to provide similar performance at a lower cost than larger rivals Intel
and Xilinx.
Siemens unveiled a validation environment that
should forestall endless iterations when designing an SoC for
autonomous vehicles.

Bluetooth connectivity to their products to enhance their applications
and end-customer experience, but they face many challenges that can
slow down the process and delay time to market. This whitepaper
discusses the unique challenges presented...
The ubiquitous attention to creating and
maintaining ethics and compliance programs point to the importance of
being a good corporate citizen, but research also bears out that the
most ethical companies are perform noticeably better financially.
This year, in the Ethisphere Institute’s list of
the World’s Most Ethical Companies, high-tech players, from
consultants to OEMS have distinguished themselves for their high
standards.
An update of the Bluetooth specification released
today enables location services accurate to within 10 centimeters
thanks to a new direction-finding capability. It arrives as a separate
draft standard is nearly ready for an even faster and more accurate
capability using ultra-wideband (UWB) radio, geared for use in
smartphones.
