Will machines ever learn to be fair? Should they?
What will it take? Who will decide what that means? And what will the
consequences be if they're not made to be fair? Why are we talking
about AI fairness? Because AIs are increasingly making decisions about
people...
3D printers have ushered in a new revolution for a
myriad of industries, including automotive, manufacturing, aerospace,
agriculture, and construction. The same can be said about the energy
industry, with more plants and power generators turning to 3D printers
as an invaluable tool for prototyping and production.

A smart meter is an electronic device that records
and reports, via some kind of communications network, the consumption
of a utility service, such as the supply of electricity, gas, water, or
heating/cooling. In this whitepaper, we explore the fundamentals of
smart metering and some of the benefits and challenges that come with...
Telemetry, control, data handling, and processing
functions provide for the flow of information between a satellite and
the earth. These entail various transmission and reception functions,
the tasks of gathering and processing data to ready for transmission,
and the routing of command data from the ground station.

Industry is placing ever-greater emphasis on
automation, particularly with the increasing deployment of Industry 4.0
technology. The latest developments in machine vision systems open up
opportunities for the manufacturing sector to raise quality and
throughput simultaneously. Furthermore, new applications are starting
to appear in other industries, e.g. object detection and...
I recently had a laptop PC that refused to be shut
off or go into sleep mode. It did not recognize the contact-closure on
its side (I am reluctant to call it a “switch”) and the software had
crashed. Most likely, the contact closure was OK, but its brief closure
was not being recognized by the laptop’s operating system. This was no
big deal, of course: I just let it run down over a few hours and then
did a reboot. It’s not just laptops, either.

Google expanded its use of deep learning in new
smartphones, home displays and Web services. It also revealed more
tools, and made pledges for securing user privacy. Google has “a deep
sense of responsibility to create things that improve people’s
lives...and benefit society as a whole,” said Sundar Pichai, Google’s
chief executive in his keynote at Google I/O, the company's annual
developer conference.

AMD snagged a design win for next-generation CPUs,
GPUs, and interconnects in Frontier, the second of three U.S.
exascale-class supercomputers. The total contract, valued at more than
$600 million, is the largest deal to date for AMD, system integrator
Cray, and the U.S. Department of Energy. When installed sometime in
2021, Frontier is expected to deliver more than 1.5 exaflops, making it
slightly higher in performance than Aurora, the first ...
As the global energy mix transforms to adopt
low-carbon energy sources and energy-efficient transportation, pressure
mounts for energy efficient cars. Today, the overall Electric Vehicle
(EV) market already outpaces the conventional Internal Combustion
Engine (ICE) vehicle market growth rate...
