While autonomous vehicle (AV) development
dominates discussion in the electronics industry, firms are a long way
off from having the right computing platforms, safety certification
standards and regulations, says a new survey highlighting current
thinking on exactly where we are on the path to autonomy.
Material waste can be found everywhere on the
planet — it’s in our oceans, landfills, remote islands, Antarctica, and
can even be found orbiting the Earth. According to The World Counts, we
produce 2.12 billion tons of waste annually. To put that into
perspective, if we could load it all onto trucks, they would wrap
around the planet 24 times. While those numbers are alarming, countries
are putting plans in place to reduce the amount of garbage ...

The urgency of IIoT security is
becoming ever more apparent, and embedding the highest levels of trust
is now essential. The editors at AspenCore have compiled a series that
will help you understand how to design in IIoT security, the
benefits of hardware-based security, use cases involving the latest
security solutions, and more.

In the design of artificial satellites and space
vehicles, the function of the thermal control system (TCS) is to keep
all parts of the satellite within acceptable temperature ranges during
all phases of the mission and to dissipate the heat produced by the
satellite into space. This can be achieved through a combination of
passive and active design techniques.
Developers today want to add rich Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth connectivity to their products to enhance their applications
and end-customer experience, but they face many challenges that can
slow down the process and delay time to market. This whitepaper
discusses the unique challenges presented...

Sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment
continued to slide in March, deepening a sales slump that began late
last year with the end of the memory market boom. The three-month
moving average for fab tool sales by North American vendors slipped to
$1.83 billion in March, down 1.9% compared to February and down 24.6%
compared to March 2018, according to the SEMI trade association.
Industry is placing ever-greater emphasis on
automation, particularly with the increasing deployment of Industry 4.0
technology. The latest developments in machine vision systems open up
opportunities for the manufacturing sector to raise quality and
throughput simultaneously. Furthermore, new applications are starting
to appear in other industries, e.g. object detection and...

In this 21st century environment, we change
gadgets every year and expect them to work correctly, even if they
don’t last all that long. They usually only survive until the next
revision comes out, but that seems to be acceptable to most people. In
contrast, there are many applications, such as field sensors, that
demand high accuracy over a long period of time. A quick replacement
for these devices would usually be unreasonable, and many times,
impossible.
The fire at Notre Dame is a reminder that system
engineering neither begins nor ends by developing the most advanced
technology. More important is to perceive potential "foresight gaps" -
anticipating how the completed system will be used.
TSMC added a N5P process and more details on
advanced packages to
its road map for squeezing advances from silicon at an annual event
here. At the bleeding edge, picking a path forward among expanding 7,
7+, 6, 5 and 5+ options is increasingly complex. “The good news is we
continue to see scaling for the foreseeable future,” Yuh-Jier Mii, a
senor vice president for technology development for TSMC told an
audience of about 2,000 attendees..
