The Semiconductor Industry Association trade group
is calling on U.S. lawmakers to support policies to sustain U.S.
leadership in semiconductors, including increasing government funding
of semiconductor research and measures that would bolster the U.S. tech
talent pool with both natural-born American citizens and foreign
workers.
Cadence Design Systems is moving beyond
semiconductor EDA and expanding into the system analysis market,
initially with an electromagnetic field solver but with plans to add
other tools with the capability to analyze complete systems.

Intel and Micron launched 3D XPoint with great
fanfare in July 2015 as the first new memory architecture in decades.
Nearly five years later, the chips are finally shipping in both
solid-state drives (SSDs) and dual-inline memory modules (DIMMs), but
their sparkle has dimmed.
Industry is placing ever-greater emphasis on
automation, particularly with the increasing deployment of Industry 4.0
technology. The latest developments in machine vision systems open up
opportunities for the manufacturing sector to raise quality and
throughput simultaneously. Furthermore, new applications are starting
to appear in other industries, e.g. object detection and...

Intel announced a basketful of Xeon processors,
Agilex FPGAs, and Optane DIMMs to power next-generation servers and
network gear. The components’ use of proprietary interconnects is
raising concerns among some of its largest customers given that Intel’s
CPUs dominate in servers.
A smart meter is an electronic device that records
and reports, via some kind of communications network, the consumption
of a utility service, such as the supply of electricity, gas, water, or
heating/cooling. In this whitepaper, we explore the fundamentals of
smart metering and some of the benefits and challenges that come with...

The internet of things (IoT) is long past the
stage of marketing hype and has been driving meaningful sales for
semiconductor firms for more than two years. Now, it’s being seen as
the key market for chip sales. Leaders of semiconductor firms
throughout the world ranked IoT as the most important application for
driving revenue this year, according to a survey conducted by
consulting firm KPMG.
Fabless chip vendors based in China have grown
faster than in any other region of the world this decade, though a good
chunk of these sales go into systems marketed by the same firm or a
parent company. Fabless chip companies based in China accounted for 13%
of the world’s $109.4 billion in 2018 IC sales, up from just 5% in
2010, according to market research firm IC Insights. In addition, the
firm found that four of the fastest-growing fabless chip vendors ...

Arm’s Platform Security
Architecture (PSA) has taken a step forward with the launch of PSA
Certified, a scheme where independent labs will verify that IoT devices
have the right level of security built in. This platform agnostic
framework will help to build confidence in IoT security.

As the global energy mix transforms to adopt
low-carbon energy sources and energy-efficient transportation, pressure
mounts for energy efficient cars. Today, the overall Electric Vehicle
(EV) market already outpaces the conventional Internal Combustion
Engine (ICE) vehicle market growth rate...
Today’s cellphone networks aren’t your dad’s
cellphone networks. In fact, 5G not only represents a vast leap in
communications compared to the flip phone days of 3G, it’s also going
to be more memory hungry. It makes sense when you think about how much
computing power people are carrying around in their hands compared to
even the early days of the Blackberry. Mobile networks are just as much
about transmitting 4K video as they are talk and text.

MIPS 32-bit and 64-bit architecture – the most
recent version, release 6 – will become available Thursday (March 28)
for anyone to download at MIPS Open web page. Under the MIPS Open
program, participants have full access to the MIPS R6 architecture free
of charge – with no licensing or royalty fees.
The future of artificial intelligence (AI) relies
on advances in the underlying machine learning technology, and an
effective ML architecture. Through research with organizations such as
Google, Arm, and leading universities that focus on data science,
GigaOm reports on two important factors required to broaden...

Everywhere you turn today, there’s talk about
artificial intelligence (AI) transforming or disrupting a process or
system. But the big issue is that it’s not really intelligent, so it
doesn’t have the capability to react to unknown situations. It uses
lots of data and computing power, and the “AI” is just a black box that
can’t explain how it came to a decision.
