Lumotive, a Seattle-based,
venture-backed startup, is unveiling Wednesday a lidar technology based
on metamaterials, a relatively new and exotic technological approach
that few if any of its competitors have adopted. Among the many sensors
destined to go inside advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and
autonomous vehicles (AV), lidars continue to be a hotbed of new
technology.
More than half of the international
patent applications submitted via the United Nations’ patent agency
originated in Asia for the first time in 2018, underscoring what the
agency’s chief calls a “historic geographical shift in innovation
activity.” Growth in international patent applications from Asia was
paced by strong increases from China, India, and South Korea, according
to the UN agency, known as the World Intellectual Property Organization.

Nvidia’s annual graphics event
attracted some 8,000 attendees here, but one expected guest couldn’t
make it — a 7-nm GPU. A nearly three-hour keynote featured new systems
and software for the company’s latest processors, announced last
August. Ironically, the most interesting news nuggets were Nvidia’s
cheapest board to date and a research project on optical interconnects.
There are many reasons to give your
embedded system “eyes” and transform it into an embedded vision system.
Image aquisition can turn many devices into ‘smart’ products or enable
entirely new possibilities. This isn’t just a trend for systems that
should work more autonomously; often it’s also an expedient step to
make systems more intelligent...

To hear the early adopters for drone
technology tell it, low-flying platforms equipped with multi-spectral
sensors can deliver high-resolution field data on everything from the
performance of irrigation systems to soil maps that tell growers where
and when to apply fertilizer. The consensus among those early adopters
seems to be that agricultural drones are a great tool for large
operations where growers need to keep tabs on thousands of irrigated
acres...
First launched in 2005, the Arduino
platform is responsible for making embedded microcontroller development
accessible to all. With its simple to use yet comprehensive approach,
Arduino has eased the often difficult task of interfacing an embedded
application to the real world of hardware devices.

Automotive and smart vehicle patents
drove growth in the number of patents filed in Europe last year,
especially from Germany and Ireland, according to the European Patent
Office's 2018 annual report. In addition, Siemens overtook Huawei to
take the No. 1 position in the number of patents filed, according to
the report, published earlier this month.
The military and aerospace industry
suffers from a big case of “it depends.” In an annual report titled
Industry Top Trends 2019: Aerospace and Defense from S&P
Global, analysts predict that the coming year will be fairly stable but
will offer some potential challenges as well.

Nowadays “Industry 4.0” machines are
interconnected, which means, they operate with other machines. In this
time of mass customization, you need configurable and smart
controllers, which can operate different tasks, by adding or removing
features or modules. This presentation will explain how to design and
build modular and scalable machines based on a Plug&Play
EtherCAT stack. A use case will be presented to illustrate this
approach.
Gene Frantz may have been the
visionary for digital signal processing (DSP) back in the 1970s, but
now he thinks we need to turn our attention back to analog to tackle
the big challenges of artificial intelligence (AI). Previously a
principal technology fellow at Texas Instruments, Frantz is now a
professor at Rice University. He is also the co-founder and chief
technology officer at at Octavo Systems, a fledgling
system-in-package company...

Combined shipments of PCs and tablets
are projected to continue falling through 2023, perpetuating a steady
decline amid a changing personal computing landscape, according to
market research firm IDC. IDC (Framingham, Massachusetts) predicts that
combined shipments of traditional PCs and tablets will decline to 391.1
million units in 2019, down 3.3% compared to 2018. Combined shipments
of the devices also declined in 2018, despite growth ...
Challenges common to industrial automation systems – like the demand for power-efficient and industrial grade components with guaranteed long-term availability – influence which solutions best suit industrial applications. Known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, the future beholds a growing number of industrial automation applications powered by smart semiconductor solutions.
