Nine demos that I saw at last month’s
International
Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) showed engineers innovating in
AI, robotics, memory, 5G, and more. In one of nearly 200 papers,
researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT) demonstrated
that low-power devices at the edge of the network can run reinforcement
learning for similar power budgets as they now run inference jobs.
Government policies that give law enforcement the
tools to access encrypted communications could represent a significant
security danger at a time when keeping data private is becoming both
more critical and more difficult, according to a panel of cryptographer
experts gathered at the RSA Conference 2019 here.

CUI’s MEMS microphones
provide users with improved audio quality in packages as small as 2.75
mm x 1.85 mm x 0.95 mm. These MEMS microphones feature sensitivity
ratings from -44 dB up to -26 dB and signal to noise ratios from 57 dBA
up to 65 dBA.

Cities are upgrading streetlights to LEDs, but
they are still on a slow road to the internet of things. Startup
Telensa and Signify — formerly Philips lighting division — have
installed a total of nearly 2 million LED streetlights to date, with
Signify commanding a slightly larger share. That’s a drop in the bucket
of an estimated 360 million streetlights worldwide.
First launched in 2005, the Arduino
platform is responsible for making embedded microcontroller development
accessible to all. With its simple to use yet comprehensive approach,
Arduino has eased the often difficult task of interfacing an embedded
application to the real world of hardware devices.

Every
chip company selling modem ICs into cellular IoT
devices must worry how their customers -- device manufacturers --
expect to make money on IoT. In 2011, Cisco famously stated in a white
paper what later became IoT gospel, circulated endlessly and
uncritically: The world will have 50 billion connected devices by 2020.
Fast forward to March 2019. We all cringe — realizing how wildly
optimistic the industry was and how gullible we were. .

After a three-year run of record chip sales, the
widely expected semiconductor industry downturn appears to be at hand.
Chip sales fell sharply in January on both a sequential and annual basis,
according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS)
organization. It was the first year-to-year decline in chip sales for
any month since July 2016.

High switching current of
32 A@250 VAC and 50,000 operations in a miniature package. Achieved
10-kV impulse withstand voltage. Power consumption reduced to 12%
compared with rated coil consumption by lowering the applied voltage to
the coil after applying nominal voltage for 100 ms relay operation.

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is a
gathering of
shut-ins who see little of this beautiful city. The indoor versus
outdoor contrast is startling. The “inmates” of the Mobile World
Congress (MWC) at the Fira Convention Center, located in a concrete
complex of suburban office buildings, spend four days in Barcelona
barely seeing in daylight one of the world’s most beautiful and
congenial cities.
Nothing is beyond the limits of our imagination
anymore, and what we are used to seeing in spy movies needs a massive
upgrade, in order to go beyond what is now considered the norm. This
was evident at Embedded World 2019, where the focus was edge
intelligence and internet of things (IoT) security.

Nowadays “Industry 4.0” machines are
interconnected,
which means, they operate with other machines. In this time of mass
customization, you need configurable and smart controllers, which can
operate different tasks, by adding or removing features or modules.
This presentation will explain how to design and build modular and
scalable machines based on a Plug&Play EtherCAT stack. A use
case will be presented to illustrate this approach.
Consumers looking to store more 4K videos of their cats
are in luck. Samsung Electronics recently began mass-producing one
terabyte (TB) embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 2.1 for the
latest and greatest mobile applications. In all seriousness, it will
probably take a while for 1TB smartphones to hit the market, and it
will be high-end models first, such as Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S10.
Instead, consumers will see the base model ...

The semiconductor roadmap could extend a decade to
a
1-nm node or it could falter before the 3-nm node for lack of new
resist chemistries. Those were some of the hopes and fears that
engineers expressed at an evening panel session at an annual
lithography conference here.
Challenges common to industrial automation systems – like the demand for power-efficient and industrial grade components
with guaranteed long-term availability – influence which solutions best
suit industrial applications. Known as the Fourth Industrial
Revolution, or Industry 4.0, the future beholds a growing number of
industrial automation applications powered by smart semiconductor
solutions.

The developers of the functional automotive
safety standard ISO 26262 aren't resting on their laurels. They've
embarked on the creation of a separate standard called "Safety of the
Intended Functionality." What is it, and what does it cover?

A San Diego-based fabless semiconductor startup has
developed a single chip wireless internet of things (IoT) platform that
allow analog radio circuits to take advantage of the power consumption
and performance benefits of digital, enabling analog RF processing to
benefit from Moore’s Law.
Bluetooth Angle of Arrival (AoA) and Angle of
Departure
(AoD) are new technologies that establish a standardized framework for
indoor locationing. With these technologies, the fundamental problem of
locationing comes down to solving the arrival and departure angles of
radio frequency signals.
