Optical PAM4 technology is going mainstream, being incorporated into Ethernet standards such as IEEE 802.3bs and 802.3cd. The characterization, compliance, and troubleshooting of PAM4 signals differs significantly from earlier NRZ signaling. With PAM4, the focus shifts from mask tests to Transmitter and Dispersion Eye Closure Penalty Quaternary (TEDCQ) for optical signals. You'll need to learn how to perform these tests.
COM is dividing the processing and the interface part of a mainboard into 2 separate items: a computer (including processor, chipset and RAM) which is a pluggable module and a carrier which is containing the I/O interfaces. The benefits of this solutions is that standard off the shelf COM modules can be used even in a customized solution. Which solution is ideal in terms of quantity, complexity, project duration and long-term availability?
In this video, Steve Turnbull of AMD explains their new AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 processor to our editor Alix Paultre at the AMD launch event in London. The V1000 targets medical imaging, industrial systems, digital gaming and thin clients, and brings together the 'Zen' core architecture and 'Vega' graphics architecture to deliver advanced graphics in a single chip.
GreenWaves Technologies, a startup based in Grenoble, France, launched an apps processor designed to do image, sound and vibration AI analysis on battery-operated sensing devices. The processor, called GAP8, is built on the RISC-V and PULP open-source projects.
In cooperation with Infineon the EETimes/EDN Europe team has produced an eBook about Connecting Real and Digital World. The eBook focuses on the topics "Smart Home" and on "5G and Secure Connectivity".nAmongst others, it provides articles about the next level of human machine interaction, how make the smart and connected home secure...

EDN Editor-in-Chief Michael Dunn posted:“Ternary DAC: Greater resolution, less bits,” that explores the interesting idea of squeezing more than just the usual single bit of information from port pins that can be individually programmed for both output and tri-state (i.e., 0, Hi-Z, 1), correlating with ternary (trit) values (0, 1, 2).

Serial NOR Flash memory and serial NAND Flash memory occupy a relatively large proportion of the total board real estate in many space-constrained designs. In this article you will learn how improved die-stacking technology reduces pin count, board footprint and system complexity.
The common-base configuration is so little used, it doesn’t even register on many engineers’ radar. But as part of the EDN CDEL project, a C-B stage seemed the perfect choice to provide voltage gain for the MOSFET gate driver, but I required more thought than expected to design a circuit that might actually work, and I wasn’t happy till I’d actually confirmed operation on a breadboard, and worked through some very basic math.
Among wireless technologies powering Internet of Things connectivity, Wi-Fi has been conspicuously absent from Silicon Labs’ IoT product portfolio — until now. The Austin, Texas, company is formally joining the Wi-Fi in-crowd with home-grown low-power Wi-Fi transceivers and Wi-Fi modules designed for battery-operated IoT devices. The company is making the announcement Monday (Feb. 26) at a trade show in Nürnberg, Germany.
