Augmented
reality is still an emerging market, but it felt like one on the verge
of arriving with the increasing quantity and quality of exhibitors and
attendees at the Augmented World Expo. The annual event was host to
industry giants and basement startups showing new products and pointing
to ones yet to come.
The
success of personal assistants has made voice control a hot-ticket item
in system design. Getting started in this technology, though, has
required significant audio and signal processing expertise. A new
development kit from Microsemi, in partnership with Amazon’s Alexa
voice service (AVS), seeks to simplify startup so developers can focus
on application rather than implementation.

Laird’s
new PC Series thermoelectric module (TEM) is tested to 1,000,000
temperature cycles and can operate in temperatures up to 120°C. The
advanced TEM is designed for high reliability applications like
polymerase chain reaction (PCR) thermal cycling, which require extended
mean time between failure (MTBF). Buy now from stock at Digi-Key

Apple
announced a Siri-powered speaker, leveraging its expertise in music
against rivals Amazon and Google. It also rolled out developer’s kits
for augmented reality and machine learning on iOS 11 and upgraded its
Macintosh and iPad computers.
Thunderbolt
is finally on the path to mass adoption thanks to Intel's move to
integrate it in future processors and make licensing it easier. With
speeds of 40 Gbits/second, plug-and-play support and a single unified
cable design, Thunderbolt should be the most adopted and accepted
cabling interface in the market today. But its uptake has been somewhat
stagnant.
The
performance characteristics of supercapacitors are suiting them for
applications requiring a high number of rapid charge and discharge
cycles and for systems implementing energy recovery. These include
hybrid-electric vehicles, wind turbines, rail transit, consumer
electronics, and electric grid systems.
Small
button- or coin-cell batteries power many of the portable consumer
electronics in use today. Efficiently monitoring the health and
state-of-charge (SOC) of these batteries without significantly
affecting their SOC can be a challenge. This article discusses how some
simple, low-power monitoring circuits for small batteries overcome this
challenge.

Most
of us know about PWM DACs. They are easy to implement, cheap, and
acceptable for low performance applications. The approach is to filter
the HF components of the PWM signal and be left with only the LF or DC
component that is proportional to duty cycle. However, the low-pass
filter can’t filter out the PWM frequency completely.

Rohde
& Schwarz have released a new flagship high-end signal generator
product which has a frequency range up to 20GHz. The new instrument
covers the frequency ranges of both the existing SMA100A, which covers
the RF range up to 6GHz, and the 20GHz microwave frequency SMF100A, in
a single unit.

Heterogeneous
SoC devices like the Xilinx Zynq 7000 and Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC
combine high-performance processing systems with state-of-the-art
programmable logic. User interfaces, communication, control, and system
configuration can be addressed by the Processor System (PS). Meanwhile,
the Programmable Logic (PL) can be used to implement low latency,
deterministic functions and processing pipelines...
Laird
is launching the Transport Locomotive Control Unit (LCU), a
space-saving solution for industrial rail applications. The new
Transport LCU is installed inside the locomotive and serves as the
controlling system for remote, wireless control...
The
thermal solution for transceiver cooling in an outdoor environment
yields an optimal solution to maintain form factor and minimize latency
of a remote radio unit. Laird’s ATC line of miniature form factor
thermoelectric assemblies provide the size and the cooling accuracy
needed to obtain peak performance.
CrossLink
is an innovative video bridging solution. This White Paper describes
five new applications for Crosslink_ three represent an emphasis on new
video bridging solutions, two are traditional interface conversion.
Today,
a wide range of connected Embedded Systems is available on the market.
And the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is driving the addition of
more connected devices. But not only “Connectivity” is essential to the
success of the IIoT, “Security” is critical too.
